Man uninjured in helicopter crash - 17 August 2005 at 17:25

A man has escaped injury after the helicopter he was in crashed in Newtownards, N. Ireland.

The aircraft overturned as it was coming into land at an airfield on Portaferry Road in Newtownards on Tuesday afternoon.

The helicopter, which had been hired from a training centre at the airfield, was badly damaged.

Emergency services were called to the scene, but no-one was injured in the crash.

The Ulster Microlight Club have been praised for their lightening repsonse on raising the alarm and also their emergency teaching skills.

A local Microlight pilot at the scene stated "Our instructors, Gerry Snodden & Ken Crompton have trained us all to a high standard, so that in the case of an emergency, such as engine failure, we remain in control and can get back onto ground without injury. I personally experienced one emergency situation when the engine had failed on my microlight. Emergency training certainly paid off, as I landed safely with no damage to myself nor the aircraft."
